Cir.No. 24.88

Reverend and dear Monsignors and Fathers, Deacons and Subdeacons, Brothers and Sisters;

I am sorry to inform you of the passing of Bishop Gregory Mansour’s father, George James Mansour, on Saturday, September 7, 2024. After having received the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Viaticum, George died peacefully, at age 93, at Villa Maria, Miami, Florida, surrounded by his family who were praying the Rosary.

George was born in Flint, Michigan on July 8, 1931, to Najib and Nahil Mansour. He was the sixth of seven children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria (Farhat) and all of her nine siblings. He was also preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings, Albert, Elizabeth, Anthony, Esther, and Georgette, He is survived by his brother Jerry.

He is also survived by his children: Bishop Gregory, Brian (Denise), Joni (Tom) John (Carolyn), Susie (Frank) and George (Kelly), and a second father to Najib (Sarah), Wissam (Eman) and Monie (Rob). George’s spouse is Amal (Zaher) Jouri. He is the grandfather of 30 and great grandfather of 16, in addition to being the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

George was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Flint, and a founding member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Flint. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having proudly served in Stuttgart, Germany.

He worked for his father at Citizens Market before venturing on his own, along with his brother and lifelong business partner, Jerry. In the 1960s, George and Jerry owned a fruit stand and deer processing center in Flint’s north end, and turned it into a grocery store and laundromat. They then went on to become one of Flint’s most respected real estate developers, building high profile projects.

George retired in 1983 to take care of his wife Gloria during her illness and to spend more time with his family. From this experience he became an active member of Hospice Care. He remarried Amal Jouri, in 1987. George and Amal made their home between Miami and Flint before residing full time in Miami.

They were faithful members of Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Miami, and on occasion Saint Jude Church in Miami. They were also active in the Miami Chapter of the Salam Club, and were dedicated volunteers to Mother Theresa’s Nuns, the Missionaries of Charity, in their service to the poor.

George was devoted to his family members and found great interest in each of them, putting them first and himself second. He was well loved under the title of Jido (grandfather) as well as ‘Ammo (uncle). George will be remembered as a sincere and good man, a man of his word, and one of devout faith and great love for family.

The excellent staff at Villa Maria could not have been better to him these past several months. The family is so very grateful to each one of them, often the silent heroes in service to others.

In Miami, a viewing will take place Tuesday, September 10, at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a Rosary at 5:00 PM and an Incense service at 7:00 PM.

In Flint, viewing will take place at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church on Friday, September 13, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a Rosary at 5:00 PM and an Incense service at 7:00 PM.

George’s Funeral will be celebrated on Saturday, September 14, at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Flint, with a viewing from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM, the Divine Liturgy at 11:00 AM, and interment to follow at New Calvary Cemetery in Flint. A Meal of Mercy will follow the burial at Our Lady of Lebanon Church hall.

For priests who wish to concelebrate the Funeral Divine Liturgy, you are asked to vest in the jibee and Eparchial stole.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Miami, FL, or Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Flint, MI.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Bishop Gregory and to all of George’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Chorbishop Michael G. Thomas,
Vicar General
