Passing of Mrs. Mary Mazloom, the mother of Deacon Paul Salamy

Obituary for Mrs. Mary Mazloom

UTICA - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Mary Mazloom, age 94, on Friday, January 31, 2025, with her family by her side.

Born in Tupper Lake, N.Y., on January 29, 1931, Mary was the daughter of the late Abdoo and Rose Mikall.

In September 1949, she married Richard H. Salamy, who passed away in 1956.

On January 18, 1959, she married Fred J. Mazloom, a committed union of 56 years. Fred passed away on February 14, 2015.

Mary worked for the Rite Aid Corporation in their division office for over 30 years. She was a loyal and dedicated employee who took great pride in her work and rarely missed a day at a job she truly enjoyed.

A woman of great faith, she had a deep devotion to St. Anne de Beaupre. Mary was an extremely generous woman to anyone who was in need, never expecting anything in return. She was a truth-teller who always did the right thing, living a life of integrity and loyalty.

As a faithful parishioner of St. Louis Gonzaga Church, Mary was a devoted member of the St. Mary’s Guild, a former delegate of the National Apostolate of Maronites, a member of the Order of St. Sharbel and volunteer for all church events. You could always find her in the kitchen, hard at work. For several years she was the chairwoman of the Lebanese cookie sales at church, which included her famous baklawa.

In her earlier years, she co-chaired several church bazaars with her husband. In 2009, she received the Massabki Award at the annual NAM Convention, an achievement of which she was most proud. This award is bestowed on NAM members who have contributed extraordinarily of their time, talent, and treasure to their parish.

She wintered in Florida and took pleasure traveling on cruises with her husband and friends. Some of her best memories were summer vacations spent in Wildwood, NJ.

Above all, Mary’s greatest treasure and triumph in life was raising a loving family. Mary’s home was open to all, and no matter how many people filled her small kitchen, there was always room for one more.

Mary is survived by her devoted children, sons and daughter-in-law, James R. and Paulette Salamy, and Rev. Deacon Paul A. Salamy; and daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnne “Josie” and Michael Hajec, and Teresa and Scott Wojnas. Always in her heart was the memory of her daughter-in-law, Mary Susan Salamy. Sitto’s legacy will continue through the lives of her devoted grandchildren, Michele and Chris Anderson, Michael and Lisa Salamy, James and Reem Salamy, Joseph Salamy and Weldon Bogardus III, John Paul Salamy, MJ Hajec and Gina Owens, Marissa Hajec and Kiernan Briggs, Rachel Wojnas, and Brian Wojnas and Marisa Hyers. She was blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, Grace, and Mary Anderson, Michael, and Carmelina Salamy, and Paul Salamy.

Mary also leaves behind her cherished “brother” and sisters-in-law, Albert S. and Elinor Mazloom, and Gina Mazloom. Her extended family includes many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her sisters, Rema Kalil, and Minnie Tanoury; and her brother, Ray Mikall.

She was blessed with many wonderful friendships throughout the years, including special friends Mona Sageer, Jeannine Hanna, Betty Karrat, Patty Karam, Winnie Mitchell, and Maureen Lewis

The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas John and his wonderful staff for the many years of exemplary service, and the pharmacists and staff at the Price Chopper and Rite Aid Pharmacies in South Utica.

For the ladies who helped keep Mom in her home, Shari Williams, Theresa Karrat, Diana Baker, JoAnne Cuda, Heidi Broadbent, Melissa Cline, and a special acknowledgement to Linda McLeod, who has been a loyal family member for over 20 years, we can’t thank you all enough.

A special thank you and our deepest heart-felt gratitude is extended to her brother-in-law, Albert, who made it possible for our Mom to remain at home in her later years. Your generosity will never be forgotten.

Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.

While our hearts are broken here on earth, we rejoice that our Mom is finally pain-free, walking freely, and seeing clearly. We know that Mom is where we all aspire to be, in the presence of the Lord. You certainly have earned your rest.

This tribute to Mary’s life was lovingly written by her family.
